    The number of incidents of people trekking across railway lines in Belgium appears to be on the decline, but it remains a problem. “Trespassing on the lines is extremely dangerous,” says Thomas Baeken of rail track company Infrabel. “Last year, nine people were killed as a result of the practice.”
  • ‘Soft Capping’ to protect Ghent's St Bavo’s Abbey ruins ahead of major restoration
    Ghent is experimenting with ‘soft capping’ to protect the ruins of St Bavo’s Abbey and the vegetation present. A type of ‘green roof’ will be installed to prevent water-seepage. A complete restoration of the abbey ruins will follow next year. The site dates back to the 7th century and is where Ghent originated.
  • Voluntary military service becomes tremendous success in Belgium: 3,248 applicants for 500 places
    A total of 3,248 men and women have signed up for Belgium’s first voluntary year of military service, according to figures released by the Ministry of Defense on the final day of registration. Only 500 places were available.
